Fly Camping, what is it and why should you do it?
When organizing a luxury safari tour someone may ask if you want to go fly camping. This person is probably obsessed with safari adventures and will likely be very enthusiastic about the concept, forgetting that you likely have no idea what fly camping actually is.
What is Fly Camping?
The “fly” bit usually throws people off. There are no flies involved, well not directly.
In Tanzania and beyond, there are resorts where you can leave your luxury safari camp and venture out into the wild for the night.
For some, the idea of fly camping may be exciting, for others it may be terrifying. However, there’s no denying that it’s an unforgettable experience!
There’s nothing quite like sharing stories around a campfire with great company, then falling asleep under the stars after some fantastic food and drinks.
Fly camping is the authentic safari camp experience. You’ll have a private, traditional campsite set up just for you for the night, so you can experience camping like the pioneering safari adventurers of yesteryear.
The experience can come in different forms, you might shower under a bucket, sit atop a long drop and indulge in a three-course meal with chilled white wine. You might drive to your fly camp at sundown, or even arrive after exploring Africa on foot.
My Fly Camping Experience
I was fly camping in the Selous with some good friends from Estonia a few weeks ago. We walked down to the camp site right next to the river and enjoyed a cold beer as the sun went down. Talk soon went to ‘what happens if…’ and who was going to swim to the other side of the river and back. We also found time to dabble in some star photography before the milky way ducked away under the horizon. I slept like a log and kicked the fire back into life the next morning when the honking hippos decided it was time to get up.
Fly Camping Examples
Sand Rivers have been fly-camping for rather a long time in the Selous.
Kichaka offer fly-camping for longer safaris in combination with their main camp. This is serious walking and camping along a remote section of the Ruaha river.
We can organise lightweight mobile camps for your safari in the Serengeti and northern parks as well.
