The Great Migration
Everyone wants to see the great migration through the Serengeti. However, there a few things to know before you go, the first being that by “the great migration” people often mean that they want to see a river crossing!
What is the Great Migration?
Wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move through the Serengeti ecosystem throughout the year – this is known as the Great Migration.
They complete a cyclical journey, following the rain for fresh grass and water sources, returning to the same areas to calf every year. If you want to see this magnificent journey, you’re going to need to know when to visit the Serengeti and what part to go to.
At Kusini Safaris, we use our knowledge on animal movement patterns, and understanding of the best safari camps to stay in, to get you to the right place at the right time.
When to Visit the Serengeti for the Great Migration
What you want to see will have an impact on when you visit.
Experience the circle of life on the plains of Ndutu in Southern Serengeti in February, as thousands of new-born calves are born every day.
Witness columns of wildebeest picking up pace as they begin their journey north through Grumeti and the western Serengeti in June.
Or, discover a black tide of noisy wildebeest covering the hillsides of Kogatende in July, the choice is yours!
The Mara River Crossing
Witnessing the spectacular crossings of the Mara River is an experience on almost everyone’s bucket list. We’re not surprised – it’s a phenomenal sight to see!
The animals cross a number of smaller rivers on their way, but the Mara River is the biggest one, separating Tanzania from Kenya, and the Serengeti from Maasai Mara.
You can usually catch a river crossing in the Serengeti in July, August and October, as the wildlife embarks on a life-or-death journey from the dense riverbanks, through deep waters full of crocodiles.
It takes patience, knowledge, and a little bit of luck to be fortunate enough to witness one of nature’s most spectacular events. Even then, there’s a chance it may not happen, our advice is not to spend your entire time waiting down at the banks (though you can if you like – our tours are tailored to your needs!).
Enjoy your safari adventure with Kusini Safaris and tour the Serengeti with confidence. Our expert safari guides will ensure that you get a true safari experience, as well as getting you back to the river should a river crossing start.
Remember nature is incredible, but also brutal! When witnessing a river crossing in the Serengeti, you’ll witness everything that African wildlife has to offer, from the triumphant crossing of thousands of wildebeest, to the chaos caused by hungry crocodiles lurking in the water below.
If you’re looking for a quiet Serengeti experience, go to the ‘wrong’ area of the Serengeti at the ‘wrong’ time of year. This way you can have the whole place to yourself!
